Each year we release a report detailing the performance of the most popular rental gear on ShareGrid. Our members use this data to gain a deeper understanding of the competitive rental landscape, and help make investment decisions for the new year.
This year we’ve taken it up a notch, and we’re excited to share the most in-depth report we've ever released. Some folks in the industry even advised us that this might be too much data to share for free, but we wanted to make this data freely available so everyone in our community can benefit from it.

Ranking method
In the past, we based our rankings solely on the rental profits each product generated. However, using only one metric - such as rental profits or rental volume - tends to skew the list towards either high-end items with higher rental rates, or very affordable items like mic kits which rent very often, but don't generate much profit.
This year we dived deeper into the data, and scored items on three attributes: rental profits, number of rentals, and ‘rental days to recoup value’ - the number of days you’d need to rent the item to pay off the purchase value. This ranking method provided us with a list of gear that rents often and generally has great return on investment.
